Janurary 1790
You are Alexander Hamilton.
Last year, you presented to congress a proposal for a new financial plan. You want to allocate all of the individual state's debts from the American Revolution to the new federal government, establishing more centralized power. A majority of Congress did not like your plan, including your political rival: James Madison.
The cunning man you are, you thought to get Madison and his allies (who are also against your plan) through good ol' fashioned negotiation.
Recently, you approached Madison's good friend Thomas Jefferson with the idea of a negotiation. Being more agreeable than his friend, Jefferson agreed.
Now, you are having dinner with Madison and Jefferson. You need to negotiate with them.
You will be presented different negotation tactics, do your best to win Madison and Jefferson over.
Be smart and choose wisely.
To kick off the discussion, will you [[Gaslight]] or [[Gatekeep]]?Good idea! Keep your enemies on your toes, I like it.
Though you've been graciously welcomed into Jefferson's home, you start aggressively attacking their political ideals and beliefs.
Oh good! You also insulted them for being Virginians, as they are rather simple minded in your opinion. Leave no stone unturned I suppose. Get it all out there.
Ehh they seem kind of upset now. Maybe you should reign it back in a little bit?
But on the other hand, maybe going all in might be the strategy. They do look like their reconsidering some of their previous choices right now.
So will you [[Apologize]] or [[Commit]]?Reign them in slow, good thinking.
You start off slow by making broad implications of what you can offer, deciding to keep it mysterious.
They take the bait, now they’re really interested. Jefferson speaks up first, offering to put in a good word about your financial plan.
This is a great start! Jefferson carries a lot of respect in the government, a good word from him might be just the push you need to get a majority vote!
OK. Try not to look too excited. Madison doesn't look quite so convinced yet. It's time to make some bigger moves.
Should you offer [[loyalty->Loyalty]] or [[a prize->Prize]]?Good thinking. No need to go any further if you don't have to.
You make a few excuses and apologize for your outburst. It's not your fault, you've had a bad day.
While forgiving, Madison and Jefferson are still a little on edge from your harsh words.
There's still time to turn this around though.
It might be best to negotiate with an offer.
Will you offer [[loyalty->Loyalty]] or [[a prize->Prize]]?Well, go big or go home I guess.
You really go in on them. In true Alexander Hamilton fashion, you give a grand speech with rather creative and intellectual insults. But at the same time, you scold them in such a way that they think about their actions, making them consider how their role as politicians means thinking about more than just their home state.
I think you've really opened up their eyes to new perspectives if you ask me. They'll definitely be thinking about this lesson for the rest of their lives.
Unfortunately, they're a little too mad too understand that lesson right now.
I hope you can fight.
(text-colour:red)[You have failed your negotiation.]This is a perfect opportunity to negotiate a deal.
As long as you're willing to publicly support the idea of the new federal territory to be placed along the Potomac, Madison and Jefferson will likely agree to support your financial plan.
This is the moment. Don't screw it up!
Will you [[Agree to support their location choice->Agree]] or [[try to negotiate something else-> Try Again]].Perfect!
You offer to publically support their location choice! With your reputation, its likely many people will also agree once you've switched sides.
In return, you ask that Madison and Jefferson gather congressional support for your financial plan.
Satisfied with this deal, they agree.
[[Continue->Continue2]]Not entirely willing to give up your position on the matter, you try to negotiate on another matter.
Unfortunately, Madison and Jefferson are headstrong in wanting to get support on the federal city being located along the Potomac river.
Looks like you're in a bit of a deadlock here. How will you find your way out of this one?
Will you [[gaslight them->Gaslight]] or [[agree to support their location choice->Agree]]?Now both Madison //and// Jefferson are intrigued!
Madison suggests their prize should have something to do with the selecting of a location for the new federal city.
Recently, there has been a lot of debate surrounding this topic. Thus far, Congress has been meeting in Philadelphia, but the recent Whiskey Rebellion has called into question the safety of this location.
So far, the only conclusion they've collectively come to is that Congress need their own territory which they can control. But where?
Southerners like Madison and Jefferson want the federal city to be by Virginia, particularly along the Potomac River.
You and other federalist think that it should be in the great state of New York or perhaps continue to be in Philadelphia.
[[Continue]] While not entirely uninterested in your loyalty, Madison and Jefferson agree that they both want more.

You, Alexander Hamilton, successfully negotiated a deal with James Madison and Thomas Jefferson!
A few months later in August of 1790, your Funding Act and Madison and Jefferson's Residence Act is passed by Congress and signed by President George Washington!
The history of the country has been changed forever.
Thank you for playing :)
